plate The Salvation Army Citadel Manchester Connecticut 1887 - 1954. Salvation Army operations began unofficially by John Thompson and James Benison, Irish emigrants, both weavers. In 1886 the work was recognized and given a charter in May 1887, with Captain Alice Estis commanding. Thirteen soldiers were enrolled, forming a charter group. Brass Band, originated in 1888 is still intact. Manchester has given to the Army two Commissioners; Mrs. Commissioner Edwin J. Parker and Mrs. Commissioner Donald McMillan. The Corps is at present commanded by Major and Mrs. John Pickup. |
