Old Training School after 1918 Fire. W. 14th St. NYC |
Description |
photo The Salvation Army Training Collage, morning after the fire. February 22, 1918. The Salvation Army Training School 126-130 West 14th St, New York City. The building was rented by the Army 1903 to early 1917 when the Army purchased the site from Mr. Douglas for $75,000. The site was known as the Douglas Mansion and had formerly been the first home of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. During the night of February 21, 1918 a fire severely damaged the Training Home. The March 9 and March 16, 1918 War Cry gives full account of the fire with many pictures of the building and the wreckage. One week after the fire, on the last day of February, 114 cadets were commissioned at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church. The fire loss was adjusted at $32,640.49. Reparations were made and the building was used by the Social Service and Trade Departments from 1919 until the summer of 1926, when the building was demolished. 11x8" |
